A Surprise Proposal in Austin, Texas: How I Helped My Best Friend Plan a Gorgeous Engagement Session

Ty's and RJ's Austin engagement photos was straight out of a movie. RJ had planned the surprise proposal perfectly, and I was so honored to be able to photograph it for him. I traveled to Austin, Texas, and rented them a gorgeous natural light studio in downtown Austin, TX. His girlfriend, Ty, had no idea what was coming. She knew they planned to take engagement photos in Austin but needed to know precisely when RJ would propose.

When RJ came to me with his plans to propose and asked how I could photograph it, I knew this would be a fantastic opportunity. As a destination wedding photographer, traveling to my clients is a no-brainer - I just hopped on the next flight and prepared for this special day!

On the day of the proposal, everything went according to plan. We sent Ty off to her makeup appointment on time. Passed by Trader Joe's to collect flowers and headed to the studio to prepare. We planned to have RJ propose in the last 30 - 45 minutes of our studio rental. I stalled for time with Ty while RJ went to grab the ring. We handed her a gift bag with a custom-designed Steven Universe book cover. Their favorite show. She opened the bag, puzzled and confused, until she read the book cover. It read "RJ & Ty, Proposal of the Universe" At that moment, the room fell to a hush. Her eyes filled with tears as she realized what was happening.

The next moments were history.

RJ got down on one knee and asked Ty to marry him, and she said yes! It was such a beautiful moment, and I'm so happy I could capture it for them.

If you're thinking about proposing to your significant other, I recommend doing a surprise engagement session! It's a great way to make the proposal extra special and romantic. Plus, you'll have amazing photos to remember the day by. :)
